EVERYTHING A CLIENT NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT BANKRUPTCY*

(* But his business lawyer is afraid to be asked)

1:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.

In these times anyone’s client may be in a position to contemplate bankruptcy. Experienced bankruptcy lawyers will discuss what a civil lawyer’s client needs to know about bankruptcy before filing. Brenda Moody Whinery of Mesch Clark & Rothschild and Kasey Nye of Quarles & Brady will tell you what you need to tell them. How your client can prepare for filing, which creditors it can and cannot pay, how your business client can avert personal liability for employment taxes, and whether filing is the smartest course.

The Honorable James M. Marlar will give us the bankruptcy judge’s perspective on the pitfalls that face a non-bankruptcy lawyer venturing into Bankruptcy Court.

EFFECTIVE TRIAL PREPARATION AND CROSS EXAMINATION

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The ever vanishing civil jury trial makes it harder for civil lawyers to develop and maintain necessary skills for trial. Seasoned trial lawyer John MacDonald will give practical tips and instruction on effective trial preparation and cross-examination in the federal civil trial. This presentation will be valuable for the experienced as well as new trial lawyer.
